A number of Hollywood's elite donated money or traveled to Haiti two years ago after the impoverished nation was devastated by a massive earthquake. Among them was Sean Penn, and his charitable work in the nation has led him to a new position as ambassador at large for Haiti, according to Fox News.
Haitian foreign minister Laurent Lamothe offered the job to Penn on Saturday, January 14, at the Cinema for Peace benefit at the Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills. A number of celebrities were in attendance including Demi Moore, George Clooney, Mel Gibson and Julia Roberts. The event raised $5 million for Haiti.
"You can spend time with Sean without having the reoccurring theme of Haiti come up," Roberts told the Wall Street Journal at the event. "There's no removing him from this conversation."
Penn's charity work will certainly increase his good karma, something he can probably use after his somewhat tumultuous past. While married to Madonna, Penn was accused of domestic abuse. However, since then the pair have reconciled, and Penn has become an activist for several good causes. We're guessing that he's done more than enough to balance out his bad karma from the past.
